The Body

Sarah Holland, MD performs comprehensive surgical procedures designed to improve and enhance the body. These procedures include breast reduction, breast reconstruction, breast lift, tummy tuck, body contouring, liposuction, as well as cosmetic treatment for skin cancers and spider veins. Candidates for these procedures are adults in general good health and who are non-smokers. A consultation with Dr. Holland prior to these procedures provides you with the opportunity to learn what to expect before, during and after your surgery, from preparation to healing.

Augmentation Mammaplasty (Breast Augmentation)
Breast augmentation enlarges a woman’s breasts and improves breast symmetry through the surgical placement of breast implants. In general, it is a cosmetic procedure performed to fulfill a personal desire for fuller breasts or to restore breast volume lost after weight reduction or pregnancy. Implants may sometimes be used for reconstructive purposes following mastectomy or injury (please see information regarding Breast Reconstruction below). Augmentation may be combined with a breast lift for the correction of sagging breasts.

Mammaplasty (Breast Reduction)
Breast reduction is a surgical procedure to reduce the size of large breasts that are disproportionate to a woman’s body and can cause physical pain. Technically called reduction mammaplasty, breast reduction improves breast size, shape and the associated conditions of large breasts that may include back, neck and shoulder pain or discomfort, restricted activity, skin irritation, sagging, stretched skin and/or an enlarged areola.

Breast Reconstruction
Breast reconstruction is achieved through several reconstructive plastic surgery techniques to restore a breast to near normal shape, appearance and size following mastectomy and may include flap techniques, tissue expansion, surgical placement of a breast implant and grafting or other specialized techniques.

Mastopexy (Breast Lift)
A breast lift, or mastoplexy, is surgery to uplift and improve the shape of the female breast that sags or is pendulous but is proportionate with the body frame, has lost firmness and elasticity, has a flatter, elongated shape or has an unsupported nipple and areola.

Abdominoplasty (Tummy Tuck)
An abdominoplasty, or tummy tuck, is a common term for the surgical procedure to correct a protruding or loose, sagging abdomen. Areas to be treated may include the center of the abdomen, or may extend to the entire area between the lower rib cage and pubic bone, as well as to the sides and back. Contouring of the abdomen can be performed using a variety of techniques including liposuction and/or removal of excess tissue and fat by excision. For individuals planning substantial weight loss or women who may be considering future pregnancies, Dr. Holland may propose postponing this procedure.

Body Contouring
Following weight reduction surgery, or any substantial weight loss, the skin tissues often lack elasticity and cannot conform to the reduced body size. As a result, the skin has been stretched and is now unsupported and begins to sag. Skin affected generally includes the face, neck, jowls, upper arms, breasts, abdominal area, buttocks, groin and thighs. Surgical body contouring improves the shape and tone of the underlying tissue and removes excess sagging fat and skin. The result is a more normal appearance to the body with smoother contours. Before undergoing this procedure following major weight loss, your weight loss must be stabilized.

Liposuction
Liposuction, also called lipoplasty and suction lipectomy, is the surgical removal of localized or regional excess fatty tissue. There are three common variations to the procedure, and Dr. Holland will determine which is right for you. Localized fat deposits of the cheeks, face, neck, upper arms, breast or chest, back, abdomen, hips, buttocks, thighs, inner knee, calves and ankles can be reduced with this procedure. This procedure may be performed alone or in combination with other procedures.

Treatment and Reconstruction for Skin Cancer
Once a patient has been diagnosed with skin cancer, Dr. Holland uses a variety of procedures for its removal and reconstruction of your appearance, if necessary. A small lesion may be removed through excision, or may require a Mohs surgery or frozen section. Dr. Holland will determine which procedure is best for you.

Sclerotherapy (Spider Vein Treatment)
Half of the female population avoids showing their legs because of small clusters of red, blue or purple veins that appear on the thighs, calves and ankles. Similarly, blood vessel malformations can appear on the face. Fortunately, there are treatment options for eliminating these, including sclerotherapy and laser. Sclerotherapy is a procedure which involves injections into the veins causing them to collapse and fade from view. With laser, the beam of light causes a similar reaction in the vein to that of sclerotherapy. Dr. Holland will determine which procedure will best achieve your desired results.
